Q. How can I improve my breeding program with organic selenium?
A. Selenium (Se) deficiency has adverse effects on male and female reproductive efficiency. In cows, this can include increased incidences of retained placentas and cystic ovaries. Retained placentas contribute to uterus infections and may impair subsequent breeding ability. For optimum profitability in the beef herd, it is important to rebreed the cows as soon as possible within the breeding season.Cows cycle every 21 days, and the cost of one missed cycle can be calculated as that calf being 21 days younger at weaning (21 days x 2.5 lbs gain/day = 52 lbs. 52 lbs @ US$1.00/lb) Resulting in a $52/head loss at weaning.
These problems can be corrected with adequate trace mineral supplementation. Se, along with Zn, Cu, Mn, and Fe, is known to play a role in embryonic and fetal survival. If cows are deficient in any of these nutrients, you may have problems breeding cows and maintaining pregnancies. Thus, cows must be in optimum reproductive health at the onset of breeding season and throughout gestation to ensure timely rebreeding, optimum conception, and calving percentage. Bull fertility is just as important, as Se can impact sperm viability and structure.
Preparation for breeding season calls for Sel-Plex® supplementation to begin at least three months prior to bull turnout to allow adequate time for new sperm production.
