Selenium Deficiencies

Selenium Deficiencies

Selenium deficiency is linked to several animal and human health diseases. Several important enzymes, such as glutathione peroxidase, that impact organs in the body, are selenium dependent. In people, selenium deficiency has been linked to several cancers, Alzheimer’s disease, the aging process and viral diseases such as HIV/AIDS.

In animals, selenium deficiency can lead to:

  • Decreased reproductive function
  • Lowered immune function
  • Increased susceptibility to disease
  • Reduced offspring survivability
  • Poor egg, milk and meat quality
  • Liver and pancreatic necrosis
  • Muscle degeneration

Even areas with adequate selenium status require supplementation for feedstuffs in order to meet and exceed the demands of modern animal production.
